How to Train Your Dragon
Written by Saanvi Patel
How to Train a Dragon is about a clever, but clumsy Viking teenager named Hiccup. He lives on the Island of Berk, where everyone is trained to fight dragons. Hiccup wants to prove himself, so he invents a machine that accidentally brings down a rare and powerful dragon called a Night Fury.
Instead of slaying the dragon as expected, Hiccup discovers that the Night Fury, whom he names Toothless, is actually gentle, intelligent, and scared. As Hiccup secretly cares for Toothless and learns about dragon behavior, he realizes that dragons aren’t enemies at all. They’re misunderstood creatures who can become loyal friends.

Hiccup uses his new knowledge to stop a huge threat facing his village and eventually helps the Vikings and dragons learn to live together in peace.

One lesson I learned is to not judge something or someone based on what other people tell you. In the movie, Hiccup is told that dragons are dangerous and that he should kill them. But later, he learns the truth that dragons are just trying to survive and find food. I can apply this lesson to my life by getting to know others and their personality, instead of assuming things about them. This will help me be open-minded and understand people better.

Another lesson I learned from this movie is to never let someone else bring me down. Hiccup was known as the “weak” boy and everyone told that he could never fight dragons. But through his relationship with Toothless, he learns all about dragons. He proves everyone wrong by defeating the gigantic, tyrannical dragon known as the Red Death. Hiccup has taught me to never listen to the negative things people may have to say about me. I should stay focused on my goals and work hard to achieve them.
